Professional experience
Sir David AR Williams KNZM, QC is a well-respected lawyer, arbitrator and author based in Auckland, New Zealand. He is an Associate Member of Bankside Chambers, one of the largest and most prestigious sets of barristers' chambers in New Zealand. Sir Williams is particularly well-known for his expertise in arbitration, and he is the co-author of the leading text on the subject - Williams and Kawharu on Arbitration. He has also acted as counsel or arbitrator in numerous high-profile domestic and international arbitrations. In addition to his work in arbitration, Sir Williams has a wealth of experience in commercial law and litigation, and has acted in a number of significant cases in New Zealand and abroad. He has been a member of the New Zealand Bar since 1974, taking silk in 1989, and was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2009 for services to law. Sir Williams's achievements have also been recognized internationally - he was awarded the status of Queen's Counsel in England and Wales in 2012, and was appointed a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (KNZM) in 2017. Sir Williams continues to be an active practitioner, regularly appearing as counsel or arbitrator in complex commercial disputes. His offices at Bankside Chambers are located in the heart of Auckland's legal district, and he is always happy to discuss new cases or arbitration appointments.
